Participants/Performers
Ever since Sherri Lynn Wood unwittingly defied the sexist dress code at Wiley Junior High School with a modest sundress of her own creation, she experienced sewing as a source of creative expression, subversive resistance, and personal empowerment. Currently based in Cincinnati, OH, Wood is the recipient of a Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters & Sculptors Grant and numerous artist residencies, including Recology San Francisco, where she undertook the task of presenting a body of work made completely from materials scavenged from the city dump. She has been improvising quilts as a creative life practice for 30 years. Her best selling publication The Improv Handbook for Modern Quilters: A Guide to Creating, Quilting & Living Courageously (Abrams, 2015) provides scores, or frameworks, for flexible patterns and creative exploration, along with practical instruction in stitching techniques and intuitive color.Sherri teaches and speaks about improvisational patchwork at art and craft schools, guilds, and conferences nationally and abroad, and through livestream Zoom workshops hosted on her website. In 2020 she founded the Brave Patch School, an online community for makers focused on becoming better improvisers in patchwork and in life!
Description
Improvising while piecing fabric requires a balance of instinct and sewing agility. In this class, artist and improv quilter Sherri Lynn Wood coaches you through developing both skills. Learn how to work with angles using a flexible pattern, then take a traditional block like flying geese and explore variations without rulers or templates. You'll skirt the edge of your comfort zone as you explore and experiment with color relationships in patchwork, and combine angles in interesting and surprising ways to create a final piece of patchwork you can use in any project.
